Nestled between the gates of Naval Station San Diego and the 5 freeway on Main street, Filipino Food and Bakery is a welcome sight in Barrio Logan and to the San Diego Asian Film Festival kickoff and foodie event, Chew the Scene.Its name is very straight to the point which bucks traditional displays of family ownership. This doesn’t mean that Filipino Food and Bakery isn’t a family operation, it’s quite the opposite. Filipino Food and Bakery is an expansion of the longtime Mira Mesa staple, Cristy’s Bakery. However in Barrio Logan, the adult children of Cristy run the show."The star of their selection has to be the sisig."The fan favorites of Filipino cuisine are present like lumpia, pancit, chicken adobo, and pork & chicken barbecue skewers. And for those looking for something specific the bisteak & sinigang will tug at your heart strings. The star of their selection has to be the sisig. Usually, sisig is a plate of diced pork marinated with a sour liquid (lemon or rice vinegar) the seasoned with salt and pepper, then sometimes served sizzling. Filipino Food and Bakery’s version comes with a little bit of kick from some red pepper flakes and when fresh, the crispy bits of pigskin add an amazing texture to the plate.The staff here at Pac-Arts loves taking lunch breaks to Filipino Food and Bakery and hope that you find time to do the same.
