WINNERS OF 2018 SAN DIEGO ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED AT A STAR-STUDDED GALA

 

SAN DIEGO, CA – November 11, 2018 – Winners of the 19th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) were announced at a star-studded gala awards ceremony on Saturday night, November 10 at the Port Pavillion on Broadway Pier. More than 500 people attended, as the festival announced the following winners:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Marcus Hu
  • Community Legacy Award: Tony Olaes
  • George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award: Christopher Makoto Yogi, director of AUGUST AT AKIKO’S
  • Grand Jury Prize: JUNE, directed by Huay-Bing Law
  • Special Jury Award: ORIGIN STORY, directed by Kulap Vilaysack
  • Best Narrative Feature: BITTER MELON, directed by H.P. Mendoza
  • Best Documentary Feature: BLOWIN’ UP, directed by Stephanie Wang-Breal
  • Best Narrative Short: FIRST GENERATION, directed by Jeannie Nguyen
  • Best Documentary Short: NAI NAI, directed by Wyatt Wu
  • Best Animated Short: YOKO, directed by Wesley Fuh

 

The SDAFF Awards Gala is part of the 19th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, taking place at the Ultrastar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center, Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium, Digital Gym Cinemas and the Museum of Photographic Arts, November 8-17, 2018. More than 15,000 attendees are expected to experience one of the largest iterations of SDAFF in years, with over 160 short and feature films from over 20 countries, including Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, China, and the Philippines.

ABOUT THE SAN DIEGO ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL SPRING SHOWCASE

The smaller of Pac Arts’ two major events, the 8th Annual SDAFF Spring Showcase is a week-long presentation of the best of Asian and Asian American cinema, held from April 19-26, 2018. In past years, the SDAFF Spring Showcase dedicates a special series to significant individuals and occasions including the 40th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon through “Cinema Little Saigon” as well as the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 through “Right to Resist.”

The 19th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival takes place from November 9-17, 2018. In 2017, the 10-day festival showcased over 150 independent and foreign films from more than 20 countries at six different venues across San Diego county. Over 15,000 people attended the star-studded red carpet awards night, screenings, Q&As, and panel discussions. The annual festival receives national and regional attention for its awards and premieres.
